Implant overdentures
A denture that stays where you put it.
Two to four implants, locator attachments, and a denture that snaps down and holds. It still lifts out for cleaning — that is the point — but it stops moving when you eat.
Why patients come here
- Practice limited to prosthodontics and oral implantology
- Every case CBCT-scanned and fully guided
- IV conscious sedation available in-office
- A written, itemized plan before anything is scheduled
How it works
Retention from the bone, not from suction.
A conventional lower denture floats on a ridge that keeps shrinking, which is why lower dentures are the ones people give up on. An overdenture solves it mechanically: implants carry small locator attachments, and a nylon insert inside the denture clicks onto them.
The insert wears deliberately — it is the sacrificial part, replaced in a short visit every year or so, which keeps the retention consistent instead of gradually loosening.
Two implants transform a lower denture. Four gives noticeably more stability and lets the upper design be opened up so the palate is less covered.
What changes
What patients actually notice.
Eating
Biting into things becomes possible again. Most patients report the lower denture no longer lifting at the back — the specific thing adhesive never fixes.
Speaking
No shifting mid-sentence, which is the reason many people stop wearing a lower denture in company.
Palate coverage
With four upper implants the palate can often be opened, which returns taste and temperature that full coverage takes away.
Adhesive
Not needed. Most patients stop within the first week.
Bone
Implants load the ridge and slow the resorption that makes conventional dentures need relining.
Maintenance
Nylon inserts replaced roughly annually; the denture relined or remade on a normal schedule.
The sequence
From denture to stable denture.
Assess
CBCT scan, an honest look at your existing denture, and a decision about whether it can be converted or should be remade.
Visit 1Place
Implants placed under local anesthetic or sedation. Your denture is adjusted so you can wear it through healing.
Visit 2Integrate
Three to four months. The denture is relieved over the healing caps and relined soft so it stays comfortable.
3–4 monthsConnect
Attachments fitted and the inserts picked up in the denture. You leave with it clicking into place.
Visit 3–4What it looks like
The attachments live in the denture, not in your mouth.
Seen from beneath, an implant overdenture carries a set of housings in the acrylic that clip onto the locator abutments on the implants. The nylon inserts inside them are the wearing part, and replacing them is a five-minute job at a routine visit.
Above is a pair from this practice — upper and lower, with the metal framework and the attachment housings visible in the base.
Questions
Overdenture specifics.
Can my existing denture be used?
Sometimes. If it fits well, the teeth are not worn through and the base is sound, the attachments can be picked up in it. If it is old or worn, converting it is a false economy and we will say so.
How is it different from All-on-4?
An overdenture is removable and rests partly on the gum; a fixed full-arch bridge is screwed in and rests entirely on the implants. Fixed feels closer to natural teeth; removable costs less, needs fewer implants and is easier to modify.
Does it still cover the roof of my mouth?
Less than a conventional denture, and with four upper implants the palate can often be largely opened. Lower overdentures have no palate to cover.
Will it ever loosen?
The nylon inserts wear by design and are swapped in a short appointment. That is normal maintenance, not failure.
Start with a scan and a straight answer.
A consultation includes an examination, a 3D scan and a written, itemized plan. If implants are not the right treatment for you, we will say so and tell you what is.
